Trick question!  SEO is important everywhere, even in places less excessively competitive than McAllen, and even in industries where there is less at stake than in the pool industry.  SEO is crucial because it helps local pool companies stand out in search results, attracting more local customers and increasing sales.

That's a metaphor.  SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization.  The name is misleading, it sounds like your site is 72% optimized and we fix it so it's 95% optimized, and, yes, some things are a little like that, but it's a vastly broader field these days encompassing all sorts of things that are not on your site, brand protection and reputation management, social media, PPC, creating external sources of traffic, etc.  It mostly amounts to getting you business from the internet, though, and for pool companies, the key is still to cultivate a long-term, mutually beneficial relationship with someone who knows that bugdroid guy personally.  If that's not an option, specialized expert industry-specific assistance is the next best thing: search engines need to be gently coaxed into liking you better than the next pool company.  It also helps that SEO is still an afterthought for more than half of local businesses, so just paying attention to it gives you an advantage over many competitors.

Results can begin to take effect almost immediately in some cases, but the full effect of any improvements tends to take 3-6 months on average and is cumulative.  SEO is a series of ongoing improvements and ongoing gains.  For a local pool company that is willing to cover a relatively broad geographical area, there is effectively no ceiling to growth most of the time.
